Background for the conference and 5 ambitions

EUROCOALASH is an international conference with focus on Europe to highlight the use of Coal Combustion Products (CCP’s)in Europe. The aim of the EUROCOALASH 2010 is more specifically to highlight the benefits of Coal Combustion Products (CCP) in the Construction Industries e.g. cement-, concrete-, asphalt-, plasterboard-, road building-, mining industry and to encourage a substantial increase in the utilization of CCP's as raw material. This is accomplished through presentations by experts from the industries and by examples from the practical world. 5 ambitions have been suggested for the conference to be fulfilled within shortest possible timeframe:

  • More than 90 % utilization of all hard coal/lignite ash and desulphurization gypsum produced by the power industry in every European country
  • Substantial increase in the use of CCP's as raw material with focus on the Construction Industries
  • Development of new business opportunities for the Construction  Industries based on mutual industrial research
  • Ensuring future availability of high quality CCP's to all industries using these products
  • Further improvements of qualities complying with international- and industry standards for CCP's.

If these ambitions can be met the conference has proved to be a success and a benefit to the involved industries and the society.

It is a hope that the Construction Industries will support the ambitions and contribute to a mutual beneficial utilization of CCP's in every case when it is economically and environmentally feasible.

There is an example of industrial symbiosis between the power industry and the Construction Industries. This is partly a result of the expectation from a modern society and public awareness as seen in the urge to use available materials rather than using virgin materials from natural resources. This satisfies the requirement of green production.

The ultimate use of CCP's is the use as raw material. However the use of CCP for e.g. road building still plays an important role. We must believe that CCP's are more valuable as raw materials and therefore the aim should be to search for more valuable uses. The use of lignite ash for road building or mine filling applications is in accordance with today's best practice.

The conference will highlight many questions and challenges but local situations always apply. From an overall perspective the intention is to suggest ways on how the 5 targets can be met and what has to be considered in the power industry to satisfy future requirements. The conference is laid out as a one line session. It is done to concentrate on the real issues presented by substantial keynote speakers.

Who should attend

The conference organizers believe that many people could benefit from participating. These includes at least:

  • Producers of CCP’s and marketers of CCP’s.
  • Users of CCPs (gypsum, cement, concrete, construction industries
  • Associate members, affiliate members, informational members
  • Representatives of national, international and EU authorities
  • Representatives of European industry co-operation partners
  • Scientific staff from universities, technical high schools and similar institutions

A poster presentation will cover the results of recent research work from European Universities dealing with the properties and use of CCPs in different applications. The poster session is located just outside the conference room. Details of poster size etc. available on request.
